Tarek Fahmy

Tarek Fahmy, PhD

Assistant Professor
Biomedical Engineering, Yale University

Much is known about immunity in health and disease, yet integration of this understanding with engineering technology for therapeutics and diagnostic development is lacking. The objectives of the Fahmy lab focus on the interface of design and testing of biomaterials and immunobiological application. We are motivated by two goals: 1) The tunability of synthetic biomaterials can be exploited to design new therapeutics and diagnostics and 2) That the same materials can be used to dissect out how the immune system works. Dr. Fahmy has a record for synthesis, design and application of such multifunctional systems for a variety of biological applications with over 38 publications, 2 book chapters and several patents in those areas.  His background is multidisciplinary spanning training in biological physics, immunology and engineering. Dr. Fahmy is a Biomedical Engineer by training (Bachelors from University of Delaware), masters from Johns Hopkins University and his PHD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  He has been a faculty at Yale (Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering) since 2002.   Dr. Fahmy is the recipient of the NSF Career Award and the Wallace Coulter Foundation Career Awards.  He is also the co-recipient of the American Society of Transplantation Branch-out Award.  He collaborates extensively with national and international investigators on the application of nanotechnology for challenging problems in therapy and diagnosis.
